I express my love for animals around the world through charity donations. But when I give to animal welfare organizations, I wonder, “Are my charity donations well spent?”
Many charities do incredible work for all sorts of animals. And conservation and ecological-minded organizations help animals, too! They work to maintain the planet’s health so all species can thrive. So they’re part of the way I show my love for animals.
Why I donate to charities
I donate to charities because I feel power in moving our world to a better place. I feel connected to so many good people doing super work all over the globe. Of course, I support local charities in my area, too.
My small donation, combined with others’ donations, powers these organizations so they can continue their good work.
Are the charity donations spent on their mission?
So how do we find out if our charity spend their money on their stated mission? We don’t want them to help one of the founders buy some huge mansion. Or spend more funds on fundraising instead of using the money for the animals. And is there a plan to ensure that the organization continues even after the founder moves on or passes on?
Having discovered some charities that don’t live up to their mission statement, I now check on an organization before I give them money. A number of websites rank charities. Nowadays, I consult Charity Navigator – Your Guide to Intelligent Giving to see how they rate the charity.
What does Charity Navigator say about Big Cat Rescue? (Tiger King series)
Just for kicks, I checked Big Cat Rescue’s rating. This charity’s owner, Carole Baskin, was in Netflix’ Tiger King series. I discovered that the charity received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator. Almost 90% of donations go directly to care of the big cats.
Some charities seek accreditation, which is fantastic. Cheryl Pokorny of Little Longears Miniature Donkey Rescue worked incredibly hard to obtain accreditation. I trust them. They’re accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.
