My Aunt Norma’s farewell poem for her dog, Mimi, still brings me joy and sorrow. I recall the joy of all the animal companions in my life and the sorrow of losing them.
Aunt Norma hosts a book signing for me
I feel so grateful that Aunt Norma hosted a book signing for the first edition of Peace in Passing: Comfort for Loving Humans During Animal Transitions. She shared this farewell poem with me in 2018 after reading Peace in Passing. She was almost 90 years old! And at the time of this blog, she is still with us!
(This is Aunt Norma and me at her house during the 2017 book signing for the first edition of my book.)
Aunt Norma has always been a wonderful part of my life. I have so many memories of sitting at our kitchen table listening and laughing to shared stories between the grownups.
And I still remember her dog, Mimi, a miniature French poodle. I was in my late teens when Mimi was alive. She was pretty feisty.
Aunt Norma’s farewell poem
Mimi (Funny, furry, thing)
Her eyes glazed over – but still a look of love
She hears not, but feels movement like the wings of doves.
Ever faithful, ever true, how I miss you, yes I do.
No one to greet me at the door. Always happy, never mad.
Full of pain, but no, not sad.
Please forgive me little one. It hurt me more, it was not fun.
It hurt me more, it was not fun.
One minute, in my arms, soft and warm —seconds later a different form.
Peaceful, restful, no more strain.
Your grave out back – now covered by rain.
An empty house – without you sure –
But have you back in pain just to endure?
Love comes in many ways – I shall not forget you funny, furry, thing.
You gave your all – that’s more than people do –
For how many friends are really true blue?
The house is still – I said goodbye to the little one.
You felt my tears upon your head – no one said this would be easy.
Our lives are saddened by your loss.
We love you little one and miss you lots!

Are you worried and concerned about whether your beloved companion’s still enjoying life?
What would make them happiest at this time in their life?
Or you’d like to prepare them for their transition?
I can help.
Wow I just was going through memory lane and googled Norma Litwin as she was always so kind to me as a teen living next store. Her husband were friends and neighbors of my parents. Her daughter though younger than me was a lot of fun to be around and was often playing with Mimi. In the mid-70’s long before it became popular, at times Mimi’s pom-pom tail was temp colored to be a cute contrasting color to the rest of her coat (looked like a show dog think the color is called apricot I’m not sure but it was an unusual shade for dog). That was a such good dog.
Anita, thanks for sharing all this! What a delight to read it!
