When a beloved animal starts acting out or acting oddly, it can be unsettling. In these moments, I like to gently look beneath the behavior to discover the origin or cause.

Over time, I’ve found that when we understand what is truly underneath the behavior, we can respond with more compassion, clarity, and care.

When cats are acting out or acting oddly

Recently, I worked with two cats whose behavior, at first, seemed confusing and concerning. As I tuned in, both situations turned out to be connected to their people’s energy bodies.

One cat was acting out with lots of meowing, the kind that can wear on us humans when we do not understand what our animal is trying to tell us.

The other was acting oddly. She looked as if she was having a short epileptic seizure, even though the vet found nothing physically wrong with her.

How I gently looked for the cause

When I tune in, I ask, “Please tell me the cause or origin of this behavior now.” Then I wait quietly to receive intuitive information. It may come as words, or as a picture or video in my mind’s eye. Other times, I receive a physical or emotional sensation.

Often, I ask for more information so that when I share what I receive, the person can connect it to their own experience and feel more supported in understanding their animal.

Carrying energy from other people

In both cases, the people loved their animals deeply. In addition, they both carried negative energy from interactions with others.

Missy releases energy for Wanda

The first woman, whom I’ll call “Wanda,”** had consciously released some heavy energy she had been carrying after counseling a client that day. At the time, she was lovingly petting her cat, “Missy.”** For a couple of minutes afterward, Missy was acting oddly. Her whole body shook. Then, just as suddenly, Missy acted fine again.

When I checked in with Missy, I told Wanda that it felt as if Missy had experienced an electric shock through her spine and nervous system. The negative energy had entered Missy, and through the shaking, Missy released it from her body. I recognized this because I’ve experienced my own cat, Bunnie, doing something similar for me.

To support both Wanda and Missy, I gave Wanda homework that I use to clear negativity from my energy body, also called the etheric body, after working with people and their pets.

Rufus didn’t like the energy Jamie picked up

My other client, whom I’ll call “Jamie,”** came to me because her senior cat, “Rufus,”** was meowing and crying loudly both in the middle of the night and during the day. She was tired, concerned, and understandably ready for some relief.

I wasn’t surprised by the middle-of-the-night crying, as I’ve met many cats who seem to have Sundown syndrome, just like humans.

But in this case, Rufus kept saying something that felt very clear: “I want my Jamie back!”

I picked up that Rufus felt a shift in Jamie’s energy, and he didn’t like it. When I shared this, Jamie remembered that his behavior had started after she returned from a conference. During the conference, her mild shoulder pain had become terribly painful.

I have worked with people who have picked up negative energy, which can affect them physically and/or emotionally. Together, we agreed that Rufus was aware of this change in Jamie and was worried about her.

I also gave Jamie a protocol she could use to clear the negative energy. Then I told Rufus that Jamie was going to clean off that energy—and that she would be much happier if he waited to wake her until after the morning alarm went off.
