A Halloween Ghost Story – My Father-in-Law Visits

I thought you might enjoy a Halloween ghost story – although it didn’t happen on Halloween, it should have! It’s in my bestseller, Peace in Passing: Comfort for Loving Humans during Animal Transitions. 

Who woke up my dogs and cats?

A number of years ago, I woke up in the middle of the night to crying dogs and cats. They were really agitated! in my house, that’s usually a clue that someone ethereal is visiting. In my mind’s eye, I saw the letters SARGE written with white chalk on a black chalkboard.

It’s my father-in-law

I asked who was in the room. Well, my father-in-law, Charlie visited, who had passed on! He was looking for his dog, Sarge who was still alive.

Where’s Sarge?

Charlie used to sit on the swinger on the back porch of his house in Charlottesville, Virginia with Sarge. They both enjoyed this time together. Even after Charlie passed, Sarge sat on the swinger. But after a while Charlie’s wife, Betty, decided to sell the house and move in with her daughter’s family in Staunton. So when Charlie went to hand out with Sarge, Sarge was gone.

Charlie visited me looking for Sarge! I told him to go to Diana’s house, that Betty and Sarge had moved there. Once I did that, the animals went back to sleep.

When I told Betty this, she wasn’t surprised. She had seen Charlie sitting with Sarge on the back porch even after Charlie passed. We both laughed when we realized Charlie wasn’t looking for his wife – he was looking for his dog!
